Odisha ଓଡ଼ିଶା


Orissa is located on the east coast of India to the Bay of Bengal which form its eastern and southern borders. Famous for the beauty and craftsmanship of Konark, Jagannath, Lingaraja and countless other temples, Orissa owns an impressive selection of decorative and utilitarian arts and crafts, who still lives in the creative imagination and skill of its artisans . With a landscape dotted with temples, the state is mixed with the legends and mythologies. Known for its fine arts, folk painting on the walls, Pattachitras, Chau dance, and architecture and sculpture of Orissa has been rightly called the land of Utkal and exquisite art. Orissa Pattachitras best defines their aesthetic of Odissi culture, tradition, picturesque landscape and unique theme that brings the vastness of life and diversity of the Divine to stand as one.

Isolated from the Muslim invasion and distant from the imperial court of Orissa has retained a pre-Islamic style of religious art that has changed little over the years.

Orissa is a modern state with an ethnic past that is still alive. Most of her tribes located in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar near Phulbani, Sambalpur, Kalahandi and Koraput. As much as 62 tribes exist in Orissa - Kondhs, Koyas, Bonda, Gadaba, Sandalwood, Juang, Oraon, to name but a few are important tribes have retained their individuality and their close links with nature. In the last week of January to early February, bringing Tribal Fair at Bhubaneswar whole world ethnicity, art, crafts and culture are exposed. For those who want a closer look trips are arranged by tour operators from Bhubaneshwar and many other cities, but it is a path stronger and longer. The Tribal Museum (THRTI) Bhubaneshwar (CRP Square), however, is quite comprehensive and provides adequate information on arts, crafts, home and life of the different tribal groups.
